Country: UK Among the most recognised expats in the UAE, Isobel Abulhoul began her career in Dubai as a primary school teacher, before founding Al Ittihad School with her husband. She later went on to launch Magrudy’s, one of Dubai’s biggest bookstore chains, before setting up the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature — now the biggest event of its type in the region.

A celebrated long-term expat, Abulhoul was awarded an OBE in in recognition of her years of service to education and British literature in the UAE, has been awarded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid for her contribution to the Year of Reading the in the UAE, and was named the Cultural Personality of the Year by Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah in 2011.
